The annual Tianfu Cup hacker competition was held in China. It demonstrated how to hack popular software, including the most common operating systems and browsers.
This year, teams from the Ant-Financial Light-Year Security Lab and the China Government and Corporate Security Vulnerability Research Institute won. Both received approximately $ 180,000 in royalties.
Hackers used various vulnerabilities and bugs to successfully hack iOS 14, Windows 10, Android 10, Chrome and Firefox and other software. For example, an attack on iOS 14 installed on an iPhone 11 Pro exploited a zero-day vulnerability unknown to Apple engineers to inject malicious code into system processes. Thanks to this, information security specialists were able to remove confidential information from the device, including a list of contacts and photos from the gallery. It took about ten seconds to jailbreak iOS 14.
The Tianfu Cup is being held in China after the Chinese authorities banned local hackers from participating in competitions outside their home country, including the Pwn2Own cybersecurity conference. Since then, they have not traveled to international events and disclosed most of their secrets to companies whose products are being hacked. Information about the methods of hacking Apple, Microsoft and Google products, however, was sent to the developers so that they could close the vulnerabilities found.
