Some Mac users update the OS right away, others only upgrade to the new version of macOS a few weeks after the release to make sure that there are no problems with the update, that they have been fixed, or even prefer not to update.
The article compiled the obvious problems and errors MacOS Catalina users encounter during or after installing the update.
How to fix macOS Catalina errors
1. Errors while downloading and installing macOS Catalina
Before you download and install the MacOS Catalina update from the Mac App Store, make sure your Mac supports macOS Catalina. List of computers compatible with Catalina:
- iMAC (2012 or later),
- iMac Pro (2017),
- Mac Pro (2013 or later),
- MacBook 12 inches (2015 or later),
- MacBook Air (2012 or later),
- MacBook Pro (2012 or later).
Some users have encountered problems downloading and installing the update on a Mac.
Errors "Network connection is lost" or "MacOS installation cannot be continued" appear when the Internet connection is poor or slow, and also if many users boot the OS at the same time. Use a faster Wi-Fi network or connect to the Internet using a cable. Reboot the App Store or try downloading the update a bit later.
If everything is ok with the connection, check if there is enough disk space. The update weighs about 6 GB, while for installation and proper operation of MacOS Catalina you will need from 15 to 20 GB. To find out how much space is left on your Mac, click the Apple icon> About This Mac> Storage in the menu bar. If there is not enough space, delete large unused files. or transfer them to an external drive.
If the macOS Catalina installer is partially downloaded or damaged, find the file named Install macOS 10.15 in the Finder application and delete it. Download the update again.
If the error “Gateway timed out” or “Gateway failure” occurred while downloading the update , download the Mac in safe mode, and then download and install the update. Logging out and logging into your iCloud account can also help.
If the update is downloaded, but the installation wizard does not start, locate the Install macOS 10.15 file in the Finder application and double-click it to start the installation.
2. macOS Catalina is stuck on the setup screen
After downloading and installing the MacOS Catalina update, some Macs get stuck on the settings screen.
Force restart your Mac by pressing and holding the power button for a few seconds. Wait a few seconds and press the power button again to turn on the Mac. Restart the macOS Catalina installation process.
3. I can not log into MacOS Catalina
Some users after installing the macOS Catalina update were unable to log in with their profile. Also, many were faced with the problem of departure from the user profile to the login screen.
Restart your Mac while holding down the Command (⌘) and S keys on your keyboard while it boots. At the command prompt that appears, type:
/ sbin / mount -uw /
Then press Enter and enter the command:
rm /var/db/.applesetupdone
This command deletes the damaged system file, so logging in will be like the first time. This method will help you log in to MacOS Catalina using iMac, Mac Pro, or MacBook.
4. Bluetooth or Wi-Fi does not work in macOS Catalina
If after switching to macOS Catalina you cannot turn Bluetooth on or off, and also connect to Bluetooth devices, open Finder, select Go> Go to folder ... in the top menu, enter
/ Library / Preferences
Delete the com.apple.Bluetooth.plist file or move it to another folder. Restart your computer and try connecting to the device via Bluetooth.
If you cannot connect to the Internet via cable (Ethernet) or Wi-Fi, start your Mac in safe mode and check if the Internet is working. If the Internet works in safe mode, there is a problem with the browser or browser extension. Update your browser and extensions, install the latest macOS update.
5. Keyboard or mouse does not work in macOS Catalina
If your keyboard doesn’t work after updating macOS Catalina, restart your Mac. Close the MacBook cover for a few seconds, then open. The keyboard should work.
If the mouse does not work after installing macOS Catalina, open Finder and go to the ~ / Library / Preferences/directory. Delete two files:
com.apple.AppleMultitouchMouse.plist
com.apple.driver.AppleBluetoothMultitouch.mouse.plist
You can also move files to another folder (for example, downloads or the desktop). Reboot the Mac.
6. 32-bit programs do not work in macOS Catalina
Apple does not support 32-bit programs on MacOS Catalina computers, and it is impossible to make them work.
In the menu bar, click on the Apple logo > About This Mac> System Report> Software> Programs. If the program list in the rightmost 64-bit column (Intel) opposite the application says “ No ”, then it will not work on macOS Catalina.
Upgrade the current program to the 64-bit version or find another.
7. Sidecar does not turn on in macOS Catalina
Sidecar is a new Apple feature introduced in MacOS Catalina. Allows you to use iPad as a second monitor for Mac.
Compatible iPad devices:
- iPad 6
- iPad 7
- iPad Air 3
- iPad Mini 5
- iPad Pro (all versions)
Make sure that the iPad has one of the latest versions of iPadOS.
List of Macs compatible with Sidecar:
- iMac 27-inch (end of 2015 or later)
- Mac Mini (2018)
- Mac Pro (2019)
- MacBook (Early 2016 or later)
- MacBook Air (2018)
- MacBook Pro (2016 or later)
On Mac and iPad, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi must be enabled. You must also enable handover on both devices. Mac and iPad must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network for Sidecar to work seamlessly.
If you have an older iPad or Mac models, you can try turning on Sidecar, but the result is unlikely to be satisfactory. You can also use third-party applications with similar functionality, such as Duet Display.
