Reuben Paul, a young man of just 13, hacked a drone in 10 minutes to expose security holes on IoT (Internet of Things) devices. The action took place in Cape Town, South Africa, during a Kaspersky Lab security conference.
Also known as the "Cyber Ninja," the kid in the seventh grade disconnected a user from his drone to take control, proving an urgent need for more stringent measures by device developers such as electronic nannies, smart home appliances, toys, among others.
The recommendation of Kaspersky Lab is for people to question the security measures taken by the manufacturers, understanding the risks before buying a connected device. Even though there is strong government control over drones, you still need to take security factors into account with much more seriousness.
In the presentation, the young man said that he was able to control the drone completely with the invasion. "If I did it, who would say that motivated cybercriminals could not do something similar?" The consequences could be disastrous, "he said.
Reuben also told the public that what we are doing for security is no longer sufficient and that care must be taken that Internet of Things does not become the Internet of Threats.
