A survey by Kaspersky shows that the volume of denial-of-service attacks (DDoS, in technical jargon) has increased by an astounding 84% in the first quarter of 2019 over the last three months of 2018. The cybersecurity firm's conclusion contradicts a technical community that hackers would be abandoning this method in favor of other forms of attack, such as cryptocurrency.
According to Kaspersky, the reason for a reduction was presumed to lie in the fact that various marketplaces of DDoS were overthrown by the authorities. However, there was a significant increase in the hiring of more specific attacks, which generated unexpected growth.
According to the data released, the increase is most notable in DDoS attacks lasting more than one hour. In these cases, the firm shows that they doubled in quantity and its duration increased by 487%. Therefore, it concludes that hackers are using more advanced techniques of invasion and attack, since the longer the duration of a DDoS, the more complicated is its organization.
"The market for DDoS attacks is changing. New services of this type of attack apparently replaced the older ones, which were dismantled by agencies and law enforcement officials. As organizations and companies implement basic countermeasures, hackers seek to knock them down with longer-lasting attacks, "said Alexey Kiselev, business development manager for Kaspersky's DDoS Protection division.

"It is hard to say whether the number of attacks will continue to grow, but its complexity does not show signs of slowing. We recommend that organizations prepare effectively so they can handle more sophisticated DDoS attacks. "
Kaspersky indicates that in order to increase the resilience of enterprises to this type of attack, they should direct investments to a structure that supports high volumes of traffic, backups, and training of technical personnel to act in prevention and recovery, as well as the use of more modern and professional security solutions.
