WHO reports increased numbers of people with hearing impairment to use headphones

According to a study by the World Health Organization (WHO) and released on Tuesday (12) by the United Nations, the musical habits of people born after the 1980s may be causing hearing problems of all this generation.

According to the data, in 2010 about 360 million people in the world suffered from debilitating hearing loss. By 2018, that number has risen to 466 million and is predicted to almost double by 2050, reaching 900 million people - basically 10% of the world's population in 30 years' time.

Shelly Chadha, an otolaryngologist responsible for the research, predicts that more than 1 billion young people are at risk for hearing loss in the near future due to the habit of listening to music using headphones, which often have a higher considered by the Organization.

That's why the WHO is proposing smartphone manufacturers and other handsets that play audio to create regulators that ensure that people do not listen to loud music for a long time, automatically adjusting the volume to a level that does not cause the ear.

Another thing that WHO is also investigating are the volume levels in public places such as show houses, bars and sports arenas. These sites are already subject to laws that regulate the noise level allowed, but these guidelines are not often followed, and WHO is working to create a whole regulatory framework that does not allow such locations to operate with sounds constant.

For the time being, the European Union is the only body in the world that requires all personal audio devices (headphones, for example) to be set to operate at a maximum of 100 db, and the UN expects its report on the increase of cases of hearing problems can cause more regions to create regulatory laws of the type.
