Japan is home to one of the largest gaming companies in the world: Nintendo. In this sense, it is normal to own the most popular games and consoles in the country.

The Japanese magazine Famitsu videogame recently revealed the 10 best - selling games in Japan in 2018. In addition, the five best - selling consoles were also listed.

Above all, estimates show a growth of 108% in game sales. There was also an 84% increase in console revenues.

Nintendo Switch is Japan's best-selling console

Nintendo Switch continues to dominate the market having won first place in the list of consoles. However, a total of eight games participated in the list of best-selling titles. That is, at the very least, impressive considering the competition.

So in 2018, we had titles like Red Dead Redemption, Spider-Man and God of War. However, these games enjoyed more success in the western market. The truth is that in Japan, Nintendo completely dominated.

So we only have two games that are not from Nintendo, Monster Hunter, which won the first place with almost 3 million units sold and Call of Duty with just over half a million. Moreover, the list is completely dominated by titles of the Japanese company.

However, it is important to note that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was released nearly a year after Monster Hunter and yet managed to clinch second place in just one month.

Additionally, we have the ever popular Super Mario, with 3 different titles in the list. In addition, super media titles like Pokémon Let's Go and the Nintendo version of Minecraft also took places.

The best selling consoles in Japan in 2018

1 - Nintendo Switch

2 - PlayStation 4

3 - Nintendo 3DS

4 - PS Vita

5 - Xbox One

However, we can see how the Japanese market is an alternative in their choices. We have the Nintendo Switch in first with almost 3.5 million units sold. Soon after, obviously, the PlayStation 4.

However, we still have the Nintendo 3DS (and all its variants) to win a respectable third place with half a million units sold. The most surprising is the PS Vita, which in the Western market is practically not spoken. Finally we have the Xbox One.

In conclusion, we can verify that the Japanese gaming market gives high priority to portability. Considering that 3 of the top 5 consoles are portable, this tells us a lot about the preferences of Japanese gamers.
