Disney and Epic Games withdraw YouTube ads after reports of pedophilia

Disney, Nestlé and Epic Games, developer of the Fortnite game, have withdrawn their ads from YouTube after reporting a paedophile network that operates within the video platform.

The case came to fruition after blogger Matt Watson published a video detailing how paedophiles used video comments to connect and exchange contacts. The messages were left in videos with children or sexually suggestive. The YouTube algorithm then recommended other videos with similar content - and they all displayed monetized advertisements. This eventually created a "lightweight child pornography network" in which the comment section became a "safe place" for paedophiles to discuss their sexual preferences and even share links to child pornography content.

On Wednesday (20), a Nestlé representative confirmed by e-mail that "all Nestlé companies in the United States paused their ads on YouTube." An Epic Games spokesman also stated the company's position: "We contacted Google / YouTube to determine what actions they will take to eliminate such content from their services." Disney has yet to comment publicly, but YouTube has told Bloomberg that it has taken immediate action against the pedophile network, excluding accounts and channels. "Any content - including comments - that put minors at risk is disgusting and we have clear policies that prohibit this on YouTube."

Total advertising spending on the videos mentioned was less than $ 8,000 in the last 60 days, and YouTube plans to make a refund, the spokesperson said. Other companies, such as Peloton, which develops equipment for gyms, have called for an investigation into the case.

Watson's YouTube video brings together more than 1.7 million views in three days. Check below:
