HP recalls batteries that can catch fire; find out if you are at risk

The HP is providing a battery recall for some of the laptops models. This is because the part can be at risk of overheating and even catch fire - literally. Last year, the company had begun a recall in the United States and now has expanded the service worldwide.

According to the website of the program, several models are at risk because they were sold with this type of battery. "These batteries can overheat, posing a risk of fire and burns to customers. For this reason, it is essential that you double-check your battery even though you have done so previously and have been informed that it has not been affected. However, if you have already received a spare battery, this expansion does not apply to you, "says the website.

How to know?

HP promises to recall this type of battery by confirming that your device is at risk. The company has made available a program on its website to do this verification in a few seconds.

"Many of these batteries are installed internally in the system, which means that they can not be replaced by the customer. HP is performing battery replacement services through an authorized technician at no charge. HP is also launching a BIOS update to add replacement batteries for program expansion. The updated BIOS puts the battery into 'Battery Safety Mode' so that the notebook or workstation can be safely used, without the battery, connected to an HP power adapter. Replacement batteries for this recall should be placed immediately in 'Battery Safety Mode', "explains the site.

How to order?

After you verify that your device actually needs to be exchanged, you can place an order from HP's own website. In the verification program, there is also the referral for the exchange.

In this request, you must provide the model of your device, in addition to the serial number.

The company informs that this can not be done with an authorized service center. If you own a business and are responsible for multiple handsets, you can place a joint order for items over 5.

HP will also ship a new battery, so you do not need to have your computer stopped in the period. Further, it informs that the delay to ship the product may vary by location.

The company also has a phone contact to ask questions about the program. Call 0800 709 7751. In São Paulo, the number is (11) 3878-8338 (option 5, enter code 709).
