Snapdragon Wear 3100: the revolution in the autonomy of smartwatches!

Qualcomm today unveiled its third generation premium wearables platform, the new Snapdragon Wear 3100. The platform replaces Wear 2100 as Qualcomm's top solution and joins the Wear 2500 children's watch platform that has been very successful in this market.

The main feature is the introduction of Qualcomm's highly energy-efficient coprocessor, QCC1110, positioned next to the main SoC. This coprocessor can disconnect the party responsible for the main processing, greatly increasing the battery life of the watch.

In practice this translates into a week of battery life.

This new SoC uses the same 28nm process and Cortex-A7 processors that are present in Wear 2100 with some modifications. This includes a revamped DSP unit, a new power management controller, NFC components and various power optimizations.

Snapdragon Wear 3100 guarantees 67% less power consumption, 49% less at GPS level, 43% less on keyword detection, 35% less on clock updates, 34% less MP3 playback and 13% less power consumption for Bluetooth or Wi-Fi voice queries than Wear 2100.

The Snapdragon Wear 3100 platform also supports the Google Wear operating system. So you can take advantage of integration with your favorite Android apps on future smartwatches equipped with Qualcomm's new platform.

Snapdragon Wear 3100 watches support more than 1 day of past use and can last up to 1 week on a single charge.

A closer look at the coprocessor

This new coprocessor operates at a 20x lower power peak than the main processor. It can only perform some basic functions and was designed only to update the clock face and read a very small amount of sensor data. It runs an event-oriented RTOS implementation instead of using the operating system, so do not expect support for applications in the low-power state.

In practice, look at this coprocessor as a kind of low-power, low-power secondary motor. When it is in operation it loses 4G LTE, Bluetooth, Wear OS and other advanced features.

This feature will not be very visible to users. In the background will be something that the device manufacturers will use in the background.

Lots of energy spared

The end result is something very interesting. Qualcomm estimates that the constant heart rate and GPS verification times can be extended from three to four hours of battery life up to 15 hours with a 450 mAh battery. Similarly, using the co-processor alone means that a watch with a 340mAh battery can run for 30 days on a full charge or a full week with only 20% of the remaining battery.

The first smartphones with the Snapdragon Wear 3100 platform are expected to appear before the Christmas period of 2018. Fossil, Montblanc and Louis Vuitton will be the first companies to use watches with this chipset.
