Ukrainian hacker cracked the current version of PS4

Ukrainian- born hacker Vladimir Pihur, who lives in the US city of Portland, Oregon, managed to hack into the Sony PlayStation 4 console with firmware version 5.00 and higher installed, which nobody could do before. His success Pihur shared at the conference Recon Brussels. According to the enthusiast himself, to achieve his goal, he used the vulnerability discovered long ago in the console's rest mode. According to him, he knew about it for more than two years.

"The Southbridge processor, which is responsible for load sharing, does not help protect the PlayStation 4. We explained how the chain of exploits and hardware attacks allows you to run the code through a secure launcher, extract private keys and sign custom kernels," says Vladimir Pihura's presentation for Recon Brussels.

Pihur decided to share information with the public for two reasons. Firstly, it is sincerely surprising that in two years Sony has not taken any action to fix the problem. Secondly, he does not like that the company does not reward the craftsmen for finding such breaches in the defense. Whether he contacted Sony and reported whether there was a vulnerability is unknown. Representatives of the company have not yet commented on the news about the possibility of hacking PS4.

Before that, let's remind, hackers already managed to bypass protection of PlayStation 4 and run pirate games on it, and also emulate a lot of titles that were developed for the PlayStation 2. However, the possibility to try unlicensed games was only for owners of consoles with an outdated version of software 4.05. Considering that the firmware PS4 is updated automatically, and the rollback to previous assemblies is impossible - only a negligible percentage of gamers could "taste the fruits" of piracy.
