Google discovers patch for Specter without compromising performance

Last week new computer vulnerabilities were discovered that compromised all kinds of technological devices. These vulnerabilities have been dubbed Specter and Meltdown. In recent days companies like Microsoft, Apple and many others have revealed their corrections, now is the time for Google to do the same.

The reason for all these companies, which develop different types of products, to be involved in the same is that the threats are manifested at the level of processors. Regardless of whether you use an Intel, AMD, Snapdragon or Apple processor, you are subject to these vulnerabilities until the company responsible correct them.

It is important to clarify the reader - if he does not already know - about what we are talking about. The Specter or Meltdown was discovered after the news that Intel's processors would have serious security breaches. Contrary to initial beliefs, not only the Californian company's processors are vulnerable.

With respect to the vulnerabilities in question, they allow, in different ranges of action, undue access to sensitive user data. Your credentials for access to the most varied services could be compromised by malicious software that was searching for this data.

The fix for these issues will always have to start from the developers of the affected operating systems. However, these fixes can significantly affect the performance of the patched devices as they may have to limit some processor accesses to kernel memory.

It is precisely for this variant that we get the latest Google discovery. Known as Retpoline, this fix will work at the software level, resulting in a zero or almost zero impact on the performance of the compromised device. This is because Retpoline will run pieces of software independent of such a speculative processor process. However, Google is now disclosing that it has discovered a fix for Specter that will not compromise the performance of affected devices. It should be noted, however, that Specter has two variants, and the second one is more complicated to correct because it directly affects a feature of the processor called "speculative execution".

Taking advantage of the occasion, the research giant also revealed that the first variant of the Specter threat and Meltdown had already been fixed in December. They report that they have not received any support request related to this fix since.
