How to roll back macOS High Sierra with Time Machine

Some users with MacOS High Sierra 10.13.x would not mind returning to macOS Sierra 10.12.x or even Mac OS X El Capitan. This can be done either by formatting the hard disk and installing the software again or by restoring the system with Time Machine.

We'll show you how to roll back macOS High Sierra 10.13 with Time Machine. If you do not have the previous version of the system saved in Time Machine, this method will not work for you.

Why roll back with macOS High Sierra?

Most users do not. Return to previous versions of the system is only if High Sierra on your Mac is malfunctioning or very bad. Some users who installed macOS High Sierra experienced a number of problems, including fast battery consumption, errors in programs, etc.

Note:  There is no official way to return to an older version of macOS. To roll back from macOS High Sierra, you need to format the hard disk, i.e. erase everything from it, and then restore the system from a copy of Time Machine. In this article, we will consider this method.

How to get back from macOS High Sierra to a previous OS version

First, you need to make a backup of your Mac and then follow the steps below.

  1. Connect the Time Machine backup drive to the Mac.

  2. Restart your Mac and immediately hold down the Command the R, to enter into recovery mode.

  3. When the MacOS Tools window appears, click Disk Utility on it.

  4. Open the menu and click Show All Devices.

  5. Select the hard drive on which MacOS High Sierra is installed, and click Clear.

  6. On the next screen, name the disk and select "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" as the format, and then click Clear again.

  7. When the formatting is complete, return to the Utility screen.

  8. Select Restore from a Time Machine backup.

  9. Select the Time Machine recovery disk that is connected to the Mac.

  10. Then select the last copy with the MacOS version you need.

  11. Select the hard drive to which you want to install a copy of Time Machine. We have formatted it before.

  12. Click Restore and confirm the action.

The macOS recovery process will begin, which will take some time depending on the amount of your data and other factors. Be prepared to wait until the process is complete.

When the recovery from a copy of Time Machine is over, the Mac will boot with the old version of the system.

Format the hard drive only for those who switched to the new AFPS file system, available in macOS High Sierra. If you did not change the system, then formatting is not necessary.
