iPhone 8 facial recognition features and bezel-less display spotted in HomePod firmware

“The iPhone 8 will sport a new bezel-less form factor”

Several reports and leaks in the past have suggested that the 10th-anniversary edition of the iPhone will sport a bezel-free display. Now, the Cupertino giant itself has left a clue about the same feature in the firmware of the HomePod smart speaker. The firmware has also revealed that the iPhone 8 may ditch a TouchID sensor in favour of an infrared camera for facial recognition.

A tweet from developer Steve Troughton-Smith reveals that the code of the new HomePod firmware contains most of the codebase for the iPhones inside it. The code reveals the existence of the upcoming iPhone’s infrared face unlock in BiometricKit and elsewhere. The camera will be used to detect your face, even in the dark.

In reply to Troughton-Smit’s tweet, another developer has posted a photo from the code. The tweet reveals that the upcoming iPhone will feature a new bezel-less form factor. The iPhone 8 has been rumored to sport a bezel-free display from the beginning of this year. Various rumors suggest the TouchID sensor will be placed below the screen, beneath the power button or at the rear of the iPhone 8. It’s also being speculated that the company may just ditch the sensor altogether. Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 8 at its fall event.
