Player FM Podcast App
Player FM is a great alternative to the other big boys of Podcast apps, and it sets itself apart by offering users 20 subscriptions for free, forever with no ads. It’s got all the polish of PocketCasts and even supports video playback now, with an interface that looks great and is a joy to use. It’s definitely right up there with the best of them.
PodStore – Podcast Player
Despite its name, PodStore is not a store of sorts, but more a way of cataloging your podcasts from iTunes and elsewhere into one neat place. The app itself does exactly what it says it does, and while it could do with a cleaner UI, it’s updated regularly and won’t let you down. You can download podcasts to your device and you can subscribe to as many as you like, too.
DoggCatcher Podcast Player
DoggCatcher is another well-known option for Android, and there’s a good reason it’s been downloaded so many times. It supports Chromecast as well as Android Auto, it has variable speed playback and it allows you to discover and create your own feeds whenever and however you like. With a dark theme for those late night browsing sessions, DoggCatcher has everything you could want included.
BeyondPod Podcast Manager
BeyondPod is yet another established entry, and while it could do with a fresher look on tablets,it has a unique look and feel all to itself. Interestingly, this has support for paid-access feeds, while this version is just a 7-day free trial. BeyondPod has Chromecast support as well as smart playlists to generate content to listen to “on the train” and so on from your subscriptions as well.
Podkicker Podcast Player
Podkicker is a great free option, it’s not the prettiest out there, but it offers up some of the simplest functionality for nothing. It’s not got all of that variable playback speed or any of that, but it does have Chromecast support, and Flattr integration to boot. A good option for those not interesting in prettiness and paying for premium features, Podkicker gets the job done.
Podcast Addict
Podcast Addict is another big option out there, but it takes a fairly simplified approach to managing things, with a focus on the artwork from your subscriptions and more. It’s a free app, but it shows a banner ad at the bottom of the display, this can be removed when you pay for the donation supported app, and there is support for the iTunes database.
Stitcher Radio for Podcasts
Stitcher Radio is like a shopping mall for podcasts, it’s easy to find something new and start listening. The interface here is all about discovering something new, and designed for those that just want to find something, without already knowing their favourites. There are over 25,000 different shows on offer here, and this is a great option for those just getting started in the world of podcasts.
Acast – Podcast Player
Acast is a different sort of podcast app and offers up feeds for you to continue where you left off and features a UI that Windows users might appreciate. It is a little flakey here and there with stability issues, but things are getting better and it’s one of the more approachable apps out there thanks to its dark theme, which is great for reading descriptions and making out controls.
Podcast Republic
This is a good middle ground option, and offers the best of advanced and basic features for everyone. There’s Chromecast support, OPML feed integration and a pretty nice tablet UI to boot. It does what you want it to as well with an offline player and auto downloading features, as well.
Pocket Casts
Pocket Casts is not just one single app you’re getting into when you download it, but one big ecosystem, you can sync and listen to podcasts online using Pocket Casts, it has Android Auto and Chromecast support and the player is sophisticated and fully-featured, it looks great and offers up all the best content out there without any fuss or fanfare.
